Empowering Health and Care for Preterm Infants and Newborns in Africa
We collaborate with interdisciplinary partners worldwide to achieve our common goal. We have established the Preterm Family Network and Neonatal Health Professionals Network to provide the platform for collaborations for exchange of knowledge to impact positively on our initiatives.
our flagship project
The Purple Basket project, an initiative of the African Foundation For Premature and Neonatal Care, aims to support mothers of preterm babies by providing them with essential items to improve their babies’ chances of survival. These baskets contain a carefully curated selection of domestic and helpful products designed to address the unique needs of preterm babies and their mothers during this critical period. The goal is to alleviate some of the challenges these mothers face and equip them with the tools and resources they need to care for their vulnerable infants.
Preterm babies are born before completing the full term of pregnancy and often require specialized care to thrive. Many mothers, especially in underserved communities, struggle to access the items necessary to meet these demands. The Purple Basket project steps in to bridge this gap, providing essential supplies such as baby clothes, hygiene products, feeding tools, and educational materials to help guide mothers through the challenges of caring for a premature baby.
By supporting these mothers, the project not only contributes to the health and wellbeing of the babies but also empowers the mothers to feel more confident and prepared. The Purple Basket project is a compassionate response to a critical need, aiming to create a safer and healthier start for preterm babies while offering much-needed comfort and support to their families.
The goal of the Purple Basket project is to provide mothers of preterm babies with essential items that support the unique needs of their infants, helping to improve their survival chances. By offering baskets filled with carefully selected supplies such as baby clothes, hygiene products, and feeding tools, the project aims to ease the burden on these mothers, particularly in underserved communities. Ultimately, it seeks to empower them with the resources and confidence needed to care for their vulnerable babies during a critical time.
We collaborate with healthcare professionals, neonatal care specialists, and local hospitals to conduct detailed research on the specific needs of preterm babies and their mothers in our target communities. This partnership will guide us in selecting the most appropriate items for the baskets, ensuring that we provide the maximum benefit tailored to their unique challenges.
By establishing partnerships with local and international organizations, businesses, and philanthropists to source donations and discounted supplies. We engage companies that produce baby care products, clothing, and hygiene essentials, while also seeking funding through grants, sponsorships, and community-based fundraising. These efforts ensure a steady flow of resources to sustain the Purple Basket project.
We develop a reliable distribution network in partnership with hospitals, clinics, and maternal health centers to ensure that the baskets reach mothers of preterm babies at the right time. Trained volunteers and staff will assist with distribution, and we work closely with healthcare providers to ensure recipients know how to effectively use the items in the baskets.
In addition to distributing the baskets, we provide educational materials and host workshops on neonatal care, breastfeeding, and hygiene practices. This is done in collaboration with healthcare professionals to ensure that mothers are not only equipped with resources but also the knowledge they need to care for their preterm babies during this critical time.
We implement a feedback system to gather insights from both recipients and healthcare providers. This information allows us to assess the impact of the project and identify areas for improvement. By continuously monitoring and refining our approach, we aim to ensure that the Purple Basket project evolves with the needs of the families we serve, maximizing its positive impact.
